Retired Barrow bricklayer seeks information about asbestos exposure

A retired council bricklayer is appealing for information after being diagnosed with mesothelioma – an almost always fatal cancer caused by asbestos exposure.

Dennis Pearson, aged 66, worked for Barrow Borough Council between 1964 and 1971 as a bricklayer. During his time there, he worked on a wide array of building projects, which is where he believes his asbestos-related ailment stems from.

Mr Pearson recalls several instances of working with the toxic building material, including cutting down large sheets of it by hand, removing asbestos lagging from pipework and even using the material while building new council houses.

He and his employees were never provided with breathing masks or other protective equipment and weren’t given training on how to handle asbestos correctly.

Decades later, Mr Pearson has now been diagnosed with mesothelioma, a lethal cancer of the lining of the lungs that is caused primarily by exposure to asbestos fibres. He was diagnosed after suffering from shortness of breath, since which his health has deteriorated further, leaving him with a lack of energy.

He is now working with Irwin Mitchell, one of the country’s largest law firms, in an attempt to receive answers about his time there, as well as appealing to former colleagues for more information.

Since Mr Pearson’s time as a bricklayer, much more has been discovered about the dangers of asbestos and how to tackle them.
